8 Must-Try Matcha in Hong Kong

Matcha madness sparks new tea craze in Hong Kong ! And Hong Kong is now a paradise for all matcha lovers. If you are one of us, visit these places to satisfy your cravings now !

Little Bao

[LB Ice Cream Bao, 48 HKD] Apart from the usual hot picks (pork belly burger etc) , their matcha ice cream sandwich is definitely worth a try. Crunchy bun sandwiched with creamy matcha ice cream, the combination is good. Some people may think that the sandwich is a little too hard , but I find it balance off quite well with the ice cream to avoid soggy texture .

Shari Shari Kakigori House

[Kyoto Uji Kin Toki, 65 HKD] A newly opened dessert place in Hong Kong and this could possibly be the next craze after korean bingsu. A Japanese version of ice kacang, of course a better quality one. More icy texture compared to the korean shaved ice. The matcha syrup is concentrated enough to make the entire kakigori tastes good even when the shaved ice has melted.

Tokichi

[Bracken Starch Matcha Mochi,88 HKD] Expect a queue if you want to try this. Matcha Mochi powdered with matcha powder and it was incredibly soft. It comes with two syrups , Matcha and brown sugar. The strong powdered matcha kochi has covered the taste of the sauce , hence the matcha taste was too heavy for my liking. The brown sugar sauce on the other hands balance it off quite well with the mochi. Perfect is the word.

[Matcha Milk Zenzai, 78 HKD] Hot matcha sweet soup with rice balls and azuki was surprisingly good. Though this is not one of the signature dishes at Tokichi, it is definitely worth a try if you are craving for something hot!

[Uji Kin Anmitsu, matcha, 98 HKD] You would be given matcha syrup for this dish so all you need is to pour the matcha syrup, mix it and sandwiched it with the waffle biscuit. The sourness of the fruits, the fragrance of the ice cream, with a light bitterness of the matcha syrup, i must say its a teaser to your taste bud!

[ Earl Grey Donut with Matcha Ice cream] Enough of sandwich ice cream ? How about a donut ice cream this time round? Everything at Munchies are organic so I guess it somewhat lessens our guilt. The one i bought was Creamy Matcha ice cream sandwiched between glazed earl grey donut. How to say no?

Via Tokyo

[Warabi Mochi Matcha Soft Cream, 50HKD] Yes. This is the place everyone is raving about. The must go place if you ever want to satisfy your matcha cravings in Hong Kong. Matcha Ice cream from Via Tokyo are made of powder from Kyoto and mixed with the smoothest Hokkaido Milk. The texture is indeed smooth and creamy.

[Uji Matcha Mille Feuille , 45 HKD] From the appearance of this dish, my usual perception kicked in – The crust is hard, but I was wrong. The crust was soft and matcha cream was light creamy. I am not a cheesecake lover, but I definitely love this.

Gum Jeng x 御前上茶

[ Matcha ice cream cone, 32 HKD] Of all the matcha dessert places, this place had totally won my heart. In contrary to the usual hong kong culture, the staff there were so friendly. Matcha ice cream was light and not too sweet yet you are able to taste the fragrance of the matcha.

[Matcha Ice cream Macaron, 68 HKD] This is my first time trying ice cream with macaron. Macaron was a little too chewy and I don’t think ice cream with macaron is a good idea but hey! its instagram worthy.

Not really! We can’t get matcha frappucinos in Starbucks here. I’ve been educating my colleagues with matcha cookies and chocolates I bought from Bangkok 😉
